Start to Read Biblical Hebrew

The Sower Institute for Biblical Discipleship (SIBD), a ministry of The Bible Society of Singapore, recently concluded its Start to Read Biblical Hebrew course, held over five consecutive Wednesdays on 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 July 2025. Facilitated by Bishop Emeritus Dr Gordon Wong, the programme provided participants with an accessible and structured introduction to the ancient language of the Old Testament. Over the course of five interactive two-hour sessions, learners were introduced to the Hebrew alphabet, pronunciation, and basic vocabulary, giving them the confidence to begin reading simple Biblical texts in their original form.

What made the course especially meaningful was its combination of language learning and spiritual reflection. Under Dr Wong’s guidance, participants discovered how even small nuances in Hebrew could unlock fresh insights into familiar Bible passages. The sessions were designed not just for academic learning, but also to inspire deeper engagement with Scripture. Through practical exercises, group discussions, and guided reading, learners gained both knowledge and encouragement as they journeyed together into the world of Biblical Hebrew.

Feedback from participants reflected the impact of the course. Many expressed gratitude for how the sessions made the language approachable and relevant, inspiring them to continue their studies beyond the classroom. The Sower Institute’s vision of equipping believers for deeper discipleship was evident throughout the course, as attendees walked away with both foundational skills and renewed appreciation for God’s Word. With the successful completion of this July run, participants are now better prepared to explore Scripture in its original language, enriching their personal devotion and ministry.
