If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. —Psalm 139:11-12
Having obtained a permit from the Commissioner of Charities (COC) for fundraising, the Bible Society hopes to support those suffering in Sri Lanka by providing humanitarian relief to meet their basic needs such as food, household essentials and medicine, alongside Scriptures, in hope of giving tangible encouragement in this time of financial uncertainty and political turmoil.
The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has spiralled into a humanitarian emergency as millions of people face acute shortages of food, fuel, cooking gas and medicine. The country of nearly 22 million people is suffering its worst economic crisis in seven decades. As of a report from a local newspaper on 22 June, the Sri Lankan government has declared that the economy has “completely collapsed” and warned of “a possible fall to rock bottom.”
Rev Priyantha Wijegoonawardena, General Secretary of Ceylon Bible Society, updates: “Due to the economic crisis, people are starving and cannot afford to buy things because prices are going higher. Some people live without meals for two to three days. The blind and deaf communities and people living in slums are the people most affected.”
5M Sri Lankans without food
17% of children may die of malnutrition
11.7% of Sri Lankans in poverty
We hope to raise $100,000 through this campaign to support more than 1,000 families who have been directly affected by this devastating crisis in Sri Lanka. The funds will be utilised for food, household essentials, and medicine.
Through this fundraising effort, the Bible Society works closely with Ceylon Bible Society and National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL) to provide the Word of Hope and humanitarian assistance to those suffering and the Christian community in Sri Lanka. Please reach out and donate to Sri Lanka to help the people there through this difficult time. We pray that the people of Sri Lanka will encounter Christ as they try to rebuild and get their lives back on track.
