How God Uses Everyday Work For Timeless Purposes In This Ever-Changing World

On 16 October 2024, The Bible Society of Singapore, together with its ministry, the Centre for Advocacy, Relationships, and Engagement (CARE), organised a workshop titled How God Uses Everyday Work for Timeless Purposes in This Ever-Changing World. The session was led by Robert Banks, a renowned Biblical and practical theologian with extensive teaching experience in universities and theological colleges worldwide, including Singapore. The workshop brought together professionals, church leaders, and lay Christians eager to explore how their daily work, in its many forms, is woven into God’s greater purposes.

Drawing from Scripture, Dr Banks highlighted the remarkable diversity of workers mentioned in the Bible, from shepherds, farmers, and builders to artisans, tentmakers, and rulers. He emphasised that God not only calls individuals into His mission through ministry but also works through ordinary vocations to bless communities, cultivate justice, and reflect His character. Participants were reminded that God Himself is portrayed as a worker—creating, sustaining, and redeeming. In light of this, every task, whether seemingly mundane or highly visible, carries significance when offered to Him. “There is no divide between sacred and secular work,” Dr Banks noted. “God is present in our professions, using them to shape us and to serve His kingdom.”

The workshop also encouraged participants to reflect on how their current roles could be lived out with a renewed sense of purpose. Through interactive discussions, attendees considered practical ways to integrate faith with their professional lives, from approaching colleagues with Christ-like compassion to making ethical decisions that honour God. The session helped participants realise that their daily labour, whether in offices, homes, or public service, is not wasted but part of God’s timeless design. The event affirmed that in an ever-changing world, Christians are called to witness through their work, demonstrating that all of life can glorify God.
