On 20 May 2025, D6 Family Ministries hosted an online session on the topic of Parenting the Anxious Generation in a Digital Age. The seminar centred on offering practical guidance and encouraging thoughtful discussions on how digital culture affects children’s mental and emotional well-being. Led by the speakers Dr Jiow Jee Hee and Lydia Lim, along with the moderator Carol Loi, the session addressed how parents can guide their children and help them foster healthy screen habits while navigating the influence of a tech-driven world.
The discussion opened with insights from Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation, which spoke of the impact of early and excessive exposure to digital devices contributing to rising mental health concerns among children. Dr Jiow supported this with current research showing a rise in feelings of isolation and disconnection linked to digital overuse.
Key topics of the session highlighted understanding digital habits, building digital confidence and creating healthy tech boundaries. The discussion shared how a family-centred environment creates positive resilience and connections between family members, which is essential for a family looking to thrive in the modern digital age. Speakers opened up reflective dialogue among parents and facilitators about supporting mindful routines at home, and connecting that to their daily spiritual journey.
Participants were reminded that parents play a vital role by leading through example, serving as instruments of God in their children’s lives. The session concluded with the importance of community in nurturing spiritual growth, and emphasised that digital tools are not inherently harmful—it is how they are used that determines their impact.
