$60,000 Love Gift, Food Items, Care Packs, and Roses were Distributed to the Underprivileged Community in Singapore during Valentine’s Day and New Year Season.

To bring warmth to the underprivileged community, HIA started a new movement called Love Your (Unseen) Neighbours with the support from over 30 volunteers and various partners and government agencies, to extend Valentine’s Day love to the underprivileged, most neglected community in Singapore on Sunday, 13 February 2022. This was co-organised by SowCare Together, an interfaith project supported by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) and Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC) Singapore, which has also mobilised youths to volunteer in the distribution.

The first group of beneficiaries that we served through this initiative included the cardboard collectors and the vulnerable elderlies. They received a total of $60,000 worth of angbaos which was majorly sponsored by Far East Organization, goodie bags filled with fresh vegetables, canned food, rice and masks, and roses, sponsored by Genesis One Tech Farm Pte Ltd, SowCare Ltd and Food Bank.

Love is more than just a romance or mere sweet talk—it is about putting our care and concern for others above ourselves into action. Love Your (Unseen) Neighbours initiative encourages the act of love, the exhibition of compassion and empathy for people who are in a less well-off state than us, which more often may also be unseen by us.

SowCare would like to remember the least and the needy amongst us by sharing the love of Christ to the rough sleepers at S3P @ Yishun and S3P @ Bible House respectively during the Chinese New Year.

It was such a joyful celebration as we had a reunion dinner together and share the love of Christ with them at Bible House. During the celebration, we also distributed gifts to the stayers. Chinese New Year is a good opportunity to share the love of Christ to the underprivileged in our midst, especially those who may not have the privilege to gather with their families and loved ones to celebrate the festivities.

Spring Festival Cheer for 1,500 Migrant Domestic Workers—Off-Day Recreational Outing to Places of Attractions

While most people are getting busy with the preparation to welcome the Spring Festival with their loved ones, a group of volunteers went the extra mile to bring Chinese New Year cheers to 1,500 domestic workers from different ethnic groups at S.E.A. Aquarium on Sunday, 30 January.

The initiative was started by the Alliance of Domestic Employees Outreach (ADEO)—a new movement of Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA)—partnering with over 100 organisations to support the welfare and mental wellness of migrant domestic workers. To adhere with safe distancing measures, the tours were done on different weeks, which initially began last Sunday.

“I feel this is such a meaningful way to appreciate the hard work and valuable contributions of the domestic helpers as they play a very significant role in many Singaporeans’ lives”, shared a volunteer who joined one of the tours.

1,500 foreign domestic workers were treated to various places of interest for over 10 weeks, which included a 2-way transportation, free admission and guided tours to the designated places of attraction, meals, and gifts for participants to enjoy. These tours were sponsored by the SingapoRediscovers vouchers donated by the public.

Following the success of the tours that had been organised by the sister movement of HIA—the Alliance of Guest Workers (AGWO)—for over 4,000 migrant workers, this initiative brought the migrant domestic workers to relax and have a bonding time with their friends. Besides, they also took this opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Singapore.

This is part of ADEO’s commitment after the launch in December, to render holistic care and support to our migrant domestic workers in Singapore. More activities will be organised moving forward to foster deeper friendships with the workers.

While we all relish the break that this festive season brings to our busy working lives, let’s all take time to appreciate and befriend the migrant domestic workers in our midst. Coming from a foreign land, they may have many stories to share.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of the migrant domestic workers and bring warmth and cheer, by extending kindness and care to them this Spring Festival.

Over 500 guest workers from 70 dormitories came together at Kranji Recreation Centre on Sunday, 16 January from 2-9pm, celebrating the festivities of Pongal Festival, which is widely celebrated by the Tamils as thanksgiving for their bountiful harvest.

This initiative was organised by the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach (AGWO)—a movement of Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA)—together with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), JTC Corporation, Project Dorm, Free Food For All, Life Centre Community Services, Dorm Mums and other partners.

The festivities featured various activities including terrarium workshop, tug-of-war and carrom competitions and lucky draws, carnival game stalls that were set up for the guest workers to enjoy, and distribution of Pongal goodie bags, Pongal rice and sugarcane. A truck full of biryani and masala teas were also brought to the recreation centre to be given out to thousands of guest workers. The festival celebrations also sought to engage with the guest workers and improve their well-being and mental wellness through many more carnival games, activities and educational programmes that will be organised every week at Kranji and Tuas Recreation Centre. The President of HIA, Rev Ezekiel Tan, shared, “The activities are a way to share the joy and festivities of Pongal with the guest workers, as part of our thanksgiving to them for their labour for our nation and to harvest fruitfulness to begin the year 2022. This is also our way to encourage them to look forward to a better year ahead.”
